Sony Ericsson K700i / K700

 Sony Ericsson K700 Discontinued
10th March 2004

There's something familiar about the Sony Ericsson K700 at first glance, with it's large display, digital camera and compact packaging it looks a little like an early replacement for the T630 - but since the T650 is still rumoured to be a little way off, it looks like Sony Ericsson have taken a step sideways with a model that's more than just a straight replacement for the T630, but isn't as good as we hope the T650 to be.

Confusing? Well, a little. The K700 doesn't fit too well into the Sony Ericsson product range, and although it's good looking and has some nice features, its feature set is decent enough but hardly ground-breaking.

The K700 has a 176x220 pixel display in 65,000 colours and a VGA resolution camera with 4X digital zoom and a "photo light". You can connect the phone up to your PC via Bluetooth, infrared or USB cable. There's Java support for games, plus 3D graphics support in hardware. There's video capture and playback too. The K700 supports tri-band GSM plus GPRS. These specifications are pretty typical for the current crop of newly announced handsets though, so the K700 is nice but nothing special.

The K700 plays MP3s and has a built-in FM radio. Internal memory is just 32Mb though, and there seems to be no way to expand this. Sony Ericsson have lots of interesting Bluetooth accessories though, including media attachments, handsfree kits and even a remote control car. Indeed, Sony Ericsson seem to have the best range of Bluetooth add-ons going at the moment.

The K700 certainly beats the T630 in terms of features, camera and screen quality, although the camera is a little limited at just 640x480 pixels. It's certainly a competent phone and holds up pretty well against the competition, it's just not terribly exciting and its blends into the crowd a little.
