September 2013 Roundup |

1st October 2013 AppleThe launch of a new iPhone is always big news, and for the first time Apple launched two new smartphones. The Apple iPhone 5S is the successor to the original iPhone 5 and includes a fingerprint reader and more processing power. A little cheaper (and a lot more colourful) is the Apple iPhone 5C, basically the old iPhone 5 in a plastic case.
SamsungTwo devices that are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the latest generation of this pioneering "phablet". If that's simply too big to contemplate, then the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch takes many smartphone functions and puts them onto your wrist.
HTCHTC pads out its mid-range devices with the HTC Desire 601 which is an inexpensive device with a large-ish display. Somewhat cheaper and simpler is the HTC Desire 300.
Other manufacturersThe BlackBerry Z30 takes the features of the slow-selling Z10 and puts it in a larger package, but it is unlikely to head off almost inevitable doom for its parent company. Sony also go supersized with the Sony Xperia Z1, a handset that possibly packs in too many features to comprehend. LG's highly competent but somewhat dull LG G Pad 8.3 marks a return to the tablet market after a long absence. The Qualcomm Toq is another smartwatch, but one that takes a completely different approach to rivals. And if all this smartphone and smartwatch shenanigans is too much for you, then the Nokia 108 and 108 Dual-SIM are reminders of a simpler time.
