Lost: the Garmin-Asus nüvifone
G60
Discontinued 13th
February 2009
One of the most catastrophic failures
to launch during 2008 was the Garmin
nüvifone - announced more than a year ago,
it would have been a class-leading GPS/phone hybrid
due for general release in Q3 2008. Well, that deadline
came and went with no product released and no word from
Garmin as to when it would ever see the light of day.
Garmin clearly wasn't up to producing
such a device, so it teamed up with ASUS, who are better
known for their PC components than their rather obscure
line of smartphones.. and they tried again. So, now
we have the Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 which
appears to be precisely the same handset that was announced
more than a year ago.
So,
perhaps now the nüvifone G60 will finally see the
light of day? Don't bet on it. Garmin-Asus have a carefully
worded press
release that says: "Garmin-Asus expects
to announce the nüvifone G60’s pricing and availability
in the first half of 2009." Wait a minute.
That doesn't say that the nüvifone G60 will be
available during the first half of 2009.. it means that
Garmin-Asus might tell us some more some time
before June.
We could tell you what we know of the
specifications of the Garmin-Asus nüvifone
G60, but at the moment we cannot see the point. They
haven't changed since the last
time and frankly we may as well tell you the chemical
composition of pixie
dust, because at the moment we have no faith that
the G60 will ever make it to market before it becomes
obsolete.
Lost? The nüvifone G60 certainly
is. Missing, perhaps presumed dead?
