August 2010 Roundup |
|||||||||
31st August 2010 The summer is usually pretty quiet for new phone releases, but we did see a few innovative handsets announced that are of interest.
RIM / BlackBerryResearch in Motion announced the BlackBerry Curve 9800 in conjunction with AT&T, but many other carriers worldwide also announced that they would be carrying it. The 9800 comes after a period of stagnation at RIM which has led to very little innovation over the past two years. RIM also announced the first (yes, the first) 3G Curve device with the BlackBerry Curve 9300.
MotorolaHeading for the US Verizon network only is the Motorola DROID 2 (which also comes in a Star Wars edition), a phone that improves greatly on last year's DROID and which will hopefully lead to a Motorola Milestone 2 in Europe. NokiaThe Nokia X3 Touch and Type (or Nokia X3-02) is a fairly normal looking monoblock phone with the unusual addition of a small touchscreen.. we cannot quite work out if this will sell, but if might just be the next big thing. Compared with this, the Nokia 5250 low-end touchscreen phone looks like something that Nokia should have announced in 2009, not 2010. Other manufacturersThe last-of-its-generation Samsung Omnia 735 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 and frankly fails to excite. Finally, LG announced a range of cheap "Wink" phones that will be sold under the "Genio" brand in the UK.
